La Maison

The Société Produits d’Armagnac, home of Marquis de Montesquiou and Comte de Lauvia, was founded in 1936 by Pierre de Montesquiou, a politically ambitious Armagnac merchant and co-founder of the Confrérie des Mousquetaires de l’Armagnac.

The Société Produits d’Armagnac, producer of the Armagnac brands Oxygène, Marquis de Montesquiou and Comte de Lauvia, was founded in 1936 by Pierre de Montesquiou, an Armagnac merchant and co-founder of the Confrérie des Mousquetaires de l’Armagnac. The organization contributed to the international promotion of Armagnac through commercial networks and diplomatic contacts maintained by its founder, helping to expand awareness of the spirit beyond France. The Montesquiou family has historical roots in the Gascony region dating back to the 11th century. Among its notable historical figures is Pierre de Montesquiou d’Artagnan, a musketeer who served under Louis XIV for more than four decades and was later appointed Marshal de France. His life is generally regarded as one of the historical inspirations for the character d’Artagnan in Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Three Musketeers.

UN POUR TOUS – TOUS POUR UN

— Alexandre Dumas

In 1965, Société Produits d’Armagnac was acquired by Pernod, which sought to develop an integrated Armagnac production operation encompassing vineyard management, distillation, maturation, and bottling. As part of this strategy, the Château de Campagne d’Armagnac and approximately 90 hectares of vineyards were acquired, and a historic distillation apparatus, known as “La Casserole,” was relocated to the estate. Further consolidation and expansion took place in 1976 with the construction of new production facilities in Eauze, including a large ageing warehouse known as “La Cathédrale.” The site was designed by the Patrix architectural office, noted for its approach to industrial design and the use of colour as an element of spatial and visual identity.

In 2021, entrepreneur Alexander Stein acquired a majority stake in Société Produits d’Armagnac. Stein is known as the founder of the gin brand Monkey 47 and is associated with the German spirits producer Weinbrennerei Jacobi, a family-established brandy company of which he is the owner in the thrid generation. The acquisition marked a new phase in the ownership and strategic direction of the company.

Following the change in ownership, the company undertook a repositioning of its Armagnac portfolio, including a reformulation and relaunch of its core age classifications as well as a redesign of its product lineup. In 2025, Société des Produits d’Armagnac was ranked among the top 50 spirits producers worldwide out of approximately 2,300 evaluated companies. This recognition reflects the company’s increased international visibility and its recent developments in Quality.

It appears that more exciting things are in store for the house of Marquis de Montesquiou!
